Nicholas Heck, of Fergus Falls Receives Scholarship from the University of Minnesota, Morris

2014 Dec 12

Nicholas Heck, of Fergus Falls is one of many students to receive scholarships from the University of Minnesota, Morris for the 2014-15 academic year. Heck is the recipient of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Endowed Scholarship, William R. King Scholarship, and Seventh District Minnesota Federation of Women's Club Scholarship.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux scholarship was established in 2008 through a generous gift from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. The SMSC scholarship program is designed to recruit and retain talented American Indian students with demonstrated financial need to the University of Minnesota. The SMSC scholarship program is administered by the University's Office for Equity and Diversity.

William King received a UMM bachelor of arts in elementary education in 1973. He is president of the Minnesota Council on Foundations and has a history of extensive community involvement with nonprofit organizations. His scholarship is awarded to seniors, with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, planning to teach elementary education in rural Minnesota. Preference is given to students of color.

Started in 1895, the Seventh District Minnesota Federation of Women's Club was a means of educating women of several communities in various topics from literature, history, and travel, to science, drama, and music. The group was also active in social issues. A local group, now called the Students Club of Morris, continues to discuss current topics of interest and is involved in community affairs. Based on merit, this scholarship is awarded to deserving UMM students who are residents of the Seventh Congressional District in Minnesota.

Heck will graduate from Morris in 2015 with a degree in elementary education and social science.

On November 22, 2014, more than 300 donors, scholarship recipients, and family members attended the annual Scholarship Jubilee, a celebration to honor Morris's generous scholarship donors and talented scholarship recipients.
